A
CITY OF A MILLION: NAPLES
|
|
| |
With
a population of just over one million, Naples is a frenetic, sprawling
city with a diverse culture and fascinating history. Known for the
bustling markets and heavy traffic of the centro storico –
the ancient Greek city Napolis or “new city” – Naples is often derided
by visitors as crowded and insular, its streets narrow and claustrophobic.
There is another side to the city, however. Despite being the most
densely populated European city, Naples is also a quiet seaside
refuge boasting peaceful residential streets, spectacular views
of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius, and first-class cultural
attractions such as the National Archaeological Museum and the Capodimonte
Museum and Gallery, which displays an extensive collection including
works by Botticelli, Caravaggio and Titian. The historic center’s
ancient churches, medieval university and countless eateries and
cafes are irresistible to both historians and vacationers.
Its location as the hub of the southern Italian train network makes
Naples easy to reach, and its temperate climate makes the city attractive
year-round.
