SCANER DETECTS CANCER

Italian scientists have developed a hand-held scanner that finds cancerous tumors, reports Reuters News and New Scientist magazine. Similar to metal detectors used in airports, the trimprode found 93% of prostate tumors and 66% of breast cancers during clinical trials. The white plastic baton was developed by University of Bologna physicist Clarbruno Vedruccio and the Italian aerospace firm, Galileo Avionica. Carlo Bellorofonte, a urologist who tested the scanner, described the results as amazing. “It seems ideal for mass-screening of cancer because it is rapid, non-invasive (patients are fully clothed) and highly sensitive,” he told new scientist. But scientists are proceeding with caution and stress that the device needs further testing.
