OCTOBER 2003 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thanks to Mike Martinelli and his committee for chairing our annual club picnic at Flood Park on August 24.  The event was again a wonderful success thanks to Mike and his committee.  Thanks also to Larry Parenti and his committee for all their hard work in running the club golf tournament, followed by a delicious dinner at the PIASC. Finally, I want to thank Angelo and Angie Fanucchi and their fabulous committee who chaired one of the most enjoyable Toscana Night Dinner-Dances yet at the club.  Not only was the menu great but the decorations were outstanding. What would we do without dedicated and hardworking volunteers like this? Thank you very much, guys and gals.

We look forward to several major events in October, namely the Columbus Day Italian-American Heritage Celebration, chaired by Terry Anderlini, and the Genovese Night Dinner-Dance, chaired by Ubaldo and Alice Siboldi. Both events will take place on Saturday, October 11, the former at the beautifully renovated Old San Mateo County Courthouse in Redwood City and the latter at the beautiful PIASC hall in San Mateo.  The celebration of our Italian-American heritage begins with a bocce tournament in the morning at Morton Park in Redwood City, followed by three hours of festivities beginning at noon inside the courthouse.  A special feature of the festivities this year will be a photo display of the life and times of the late Judge Louis Dematteis. We will honor this prominent Italian-American citizen of San Mateo County, who was also a great advocate of the contributions by Italians and Italo-Americans to the United States and to the entire world. Present will be many dignitaries, including a representative from the Italian Consulate in San Francisco.  There will be a celebrity bocce tournament, beautiful singing of favorite Italian songs by Maria Pignati, great Italian music, and delicious finger foods and desserts, including wine, soft drinks, and a raffle.  All the proceeds raised, including $1,000 from the PIASC, will be donated to the San Mateo County Historical Association. The day will be capped by a fabulous Genovese Night Dinner-Dance at the PIASC. This evening event starts out with entertainment by members of the Peninsula Youth Symphony, followed by a delicious dinner, including hors d’oeuvres, special antipasto, ravioli with a special filling and sauce made by none other than chairpersons Ubaldo and Alice Siboldi, a choice of prime rib or chicken with all the trimmings, special dessert by Dianda, and bottled wine. After dinner we can dance all night to the great music of one of the best bands around, the Lou Roselli Band.
Note the enclosed flyer concerning something new at the PIASC- a Sunday afternoon get-together on October 19. What can be better than spending a casual Sunday afternoon with your friends and family, enjoying good wines, cheeses, focaccias, fresh fruits, finger foods, Italian music and the artists who will perform or display their products and their talents in the beautiful PIASC hall? Plan on attending this fun afternoon at the PIASC.

Please note also that our Sicilian Night Dinner-Dance is coming up on Saturday, November 15.  Chairpersons Romolo and Angela Cappello are planning another great event for that evening.  The band will be the famous Nino Piazza’s “Italica” (formerly “New Expresso Band”). You will find all the details and a coupon for ordering your tickets in the next Pensogram.

Grazie e Saluti a Tutti,
Emil Bagneschi
