FESTA
IN FLORIDA
|
|
| |
What
started out as a fundraiser has evolved into a much-anticipated
annual event. In 1998, Tampa’s Italian Club, L’Unione Italiana,
started its tradition of Festa Italiana to raise money for the restoration
of its historic building in Ybor City. Founded in 1894, L’Unione
Italiana served as a cultural center for Italian immigrants in the
Tampa area, and today the club continues to preserve Tampa’s Italian
culture and heritage.
The Festa has grown into a large outdoor family event, with some
15,000 people attending. Festa features food from the bay area,
authentic Italian cooking, baking and winemaking, grape stomping,
Italian music, arts and crafts.
The fifth annual Festa Italiana took place on April 14th in Ybor
City’s Centennial Park. The Festa opened with a parade and ended
with Sicilian dancing and music. Throughout the day, dozens of performers
entertained the crowd, and cooks from 30 different restaurants prepared
Italian dishes.

EASTER
FIRE
|
|
| |
The
“Scoppio del Carro” (Cart of Fire) is one of the lesser known Italian
customs which is celebrated in Florence during Holy Week. At noon
on Easter Sunday, crowds gather in the Piazza del Duomo to witness
the explosion of a cart full of fireworks in observance of this religious
feast.
The ancient tradition comes from the legend of Pazzino dei Pazzi who
was awarded with pieces of flint from the Holy Sepulcher for his work
in the First Crusades. This flint was then used by the bishop on Holy
Saturday to light the candle. The Pazzi family carried on the legacy
by building an elaborate cart which was three stories high to be pulled
through the city by white oxen.
This ritual has been carried on for more than 300 years. During the
Easter Mass at the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, the Archbishop
lights a dove shaped rocket called the Colombina which ignites the
cart to produce a magnificent fireworks display. |
